History:
--------------------------------------------------
North American T-6 Texan

The T-6 trainer series of aircraft was one of the most important
aircraft designs of the Second World War Era. The total production
of T-6 (17,096) was greater then most of the planes that the pilots
trained to fly.

The T-6G was the finial major variant of the T-6 family.
As remanufactured aircraft, the T-6G used earlier T-6/SNJ airframes.
(as a side note when the Airforce decided to start the remanufacturing
process the Airforce did not have enough T-6 airframes to complete the
contract, so the airforce had to repurchase a number of aircraft back,
with prices upwards of $8,000.00 for aircraft it had sold at $500.00
after the Second World War ended.) The A in designation was dropped
when the Airforce changed the designation of trainers both Advanced
and Basic to a simple "T" for trainer.

Modification that where done during
the remanufacturing process where:
-----------------------------------
*) Square tip propeller (reduced the noise level by 65%)
*) Single pane safety glass (for better visibility)
*) Metal covered control surfaces (reduced maintenance)
*) P-51 type steerable tail wheel
*) New instrument panel (font seat and back seat where identical now)
*) Fuel capacity increased to 140 gallons
*) New electronics and instruments added

A total of 2,068 SNJ/T-6 where remanufactured as T-6G's. The Navy
had planned a similar rebuild program of 50 aircraft, to be disengaged
SNJ-7 but after six had been completed when the contract was canceled.
Three of the aircraft where fitted with tailhooks and where
disgniated SNJ-7C.

The T-6 in Korea:
Flying in the 6147th TCS(A) Officially know as FACs (Forward Air
Controllers) the T-6 was known to the men on the ground, both
UN troops and the Communist Troops as Mosquitoes. The role of the
T-6 was a spotter plane for the attack jets that flew from airbases
hundred of miles away, from Japan or off aircraft Carriers in the
Yellow Sea. The T-6s would roam the peninsula of Korea looking for
targets of opportunity as the fighter/attack aircraft did in the
Second World War after escorting the bombs to target. After a target
was located the T-6s would call in the attack jets and when they
arrived the T-6 would fire smoke rockets at the targets so the jets
could find them quickly. The fight/attack jets could not do this
because of a the lack of fuel from flying from the bases much further
away. In this role the T-6s assigned to the 6147th was exceptional,
flying 40,354 combat sorties. There efforts where instrumental in
the destruction of:

8 Communist Divisions
5 Tank Divions
5,079 vehicles
563 artillery pieces
84 bridges
12 locomotives & untold thousands of rail cars

The Mosquitoes lost 33 men and 42 aircraft which where either shot
down or written off to battle damage.
