=================================================================

The Drover was developed postwar by deHavilland Australia to
provide a tough, reliable replacement for the Dragon which was
then out of production. The first test flights took place in
early 1948, and the Mark I's were soon in service. The three
engine configuration was chosen to provide safe operation with
one engine out, important in the remote areas where these planes
were to operate.

Drovers were used by a variety of operators in the Australia-Pacific
region - Qantas, TAA (Trans Australia Airlines), DCA (Aust Dept Civil
Aviation), Fiji Airways, and others. However the operator most
remembered over the years is the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Special thanks to Des Robinson for his assistance in tuning the
flight model based on his many hours in Drovers.

We'd recommend users download the fine Drover panel by John McGuigan
to enhance the flight experience with this aircraft. (look for
"drovpl01.zip" at the IUP site).

The GIF file shows VH-DRE in early morning
              at Cloncurry ready for boarding.

Aircraft Operation.
------------------
Engine Limitations.

Full Throttle (5 Min max) 2350 rpm maximum
Maximum Climb (30 Min) 2100 rpm
Maximum Cruise (30 Min) 2100 rpm
Normal Cruise 1900-2050 rpm

The engines are fitted with a fixed pitch propellor, so care should
be observed not to exceed the max rpm during the takeoff.

The engine Mixture Control should not be used below 3000 ft. and
should not be used to cause a drop in engine rpm.

Aircraft Handling.

The following speeds and proceedures apply to the flightsim model and
should not be used in real life situations.
All speeds are Indicated Airspeed.

Takeoff/Climb & Cruise :

Normal engine start and pre takeoff checks should be completed.

: Select first stage of flap
: Apply full power.
: The tail should be raised at 40 kts
: Commence rotation at 65 kts for a liftoff at 70 kts
: Accelerate to 80 kts for climb.
: At a safe height retract flaps and reduce engine rpm to climb power.
: Maintain a climb speed of 80 kts until cruise altitude is reached.
: Level off and as airspeed increases reduce engine rpm to normal cruise.
Normal Sea level cruise speed is 122 kts.

Descent and Landing :

: Reduce power to maintain a descent speed of 100 kts and a VSI of 500ft/min
: On joining the circuit reduce speed to 80 kts and extend first stage of flaps.
: Final approach should be made at 70 kts and the flaps extended as required.
: The aircraft can be wheeled on smoothly at 65 kts.

Des who was a wealth of help, returned his notes etc when he retired, so if
there are any former Drover Drivers out there who have access to the aircraft
handling notes and would like to contribute to improving the accuracy of the
information above we would appreciate hearing from you.
